A Family Day out in the Jewellery Quarter

This week marks half term and it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with the family if you have some time booked off work. Read on for our idea of a perfect family day out in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The Pen Museum

The Jewellery Quarter has a rich history with several museums and galleries. The Pen Museum is one of our favourites and it’s ideally suited for the little and big members of the family.

Did you know, during the 19th Century, 75% of everything written in the world was with a ‘Birmingham’ pen? Birmingham was at the forefront of this trade and, at one time, there were about 100 factories in the Jewellery Quarter area.

Set in the atmosphere of a former Victorian pen factory, The Pen Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Birmingham’s trade. It’s more than just a passive museum with objects on display. It’s a hands-on collection! The whole family can get involved and try writing with a variety of different tools including quills and typewriters. You can even try writing in Braille or make your own pen nib using original machinery.

With adult admissions priced at only £5 and free entry for children under 16 (a 10% voluntary donation is welcomed), it’s not only a fascinating and educational activity but a cheap one, too.

St Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church sits in Birmingham’s only remaining Georgian Square, St Paul’s Square, and offers an oasis of calm in a busy city. St Paul’s welcomes members of all backgrounds and faiths to enjoy the church. The grounds surrounding the church are beautiful and serene, and it’s a great opportunity to take a peaceful walk and work up an appetite before lunch.

Lunch at Pasta Di Piazza

From pasta, to pizzas to sharing platters, we’ve got something for all the family at Pasta Di Piazza, and dishes that are great for sharing. Our cosy and homely restaurant, warm service and traditional, honest Italian cuisine are the perfect way to fuel up after a day of exploring Birmingham’s picturesque and charming Jewellery Quarter.
