It’s that time again when the children break up from school for the long summer holiday. The sun is shining (a lot this year!), and you’re trying to plan activities to keep the children occupied over the weeks ahead. A day out in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter or a visit to the City Centre could be the perfect answer. An opportunity to learn something new and have fun, too! With lots on offer, many attractions are free with some pre-planning, or for a small fee, you can enjoy fun events in and around the city. Here are a few events and activities we’re looking forward to over the summer holiday…
LEGOLAND Discovery Centre
LEGOLAND has come to Birmingham. No more expensive trips to Windsor! Children and adults alike love LEGO, so if you’re into LEGO, this is just as much a treat for you as it is for the little ones. The new, much anticipated ‘Discovery Centre’ is now open and perfect for all weather over the summer holiday. Located in Brindley Place in the heart of the city, the main entrance boasts a huge LEGO giraffe – just like the exterior of LEGOLAND in Berlin. There are 10 themed LEGO play zones, a Build and Test area and a 4D cinema at the 58,900 square-foot centre. Themed rides include Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice, and the entrance to the Kingdom Quest is set to look like a castle complete with balconies, flags, knights and jesters. Book your tickets for this popular new attraction online.
Family Fun Day at the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter
After trading ceased in 1981, the original factory is now a remarkable museum, which tells the story of the Jewellery Quarter and Birmingham’s renowned jewellery and metalworking heritage. Built around a perfectly preserved jewellery workshop, the museum offers a unique glimpse of working life in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter.
On the 2nd, 16th and 23rd August of the summer holiday, the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter are holding Family Fun Days from 1pm – 3pm. Join the learning officer for a fun-filled afternoon and take a family-friendly guided tour of the Smith & Pepper jewellery factory, and enjoy a fun craft activity in the education space. Pre-booking is essential so do book early to avoid disappointment.
Dippy the Dinosaur at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
You can see the famous ‘Dippy’ skeleton cast from the Natural History Museum for free in Birmingham this summer holiday. Here until the 9th September, the British icon is on a mission to inspire five million natural history adventures, encouraging families to explore nature on their doorstep. The full skeleton cast in its displayed pose is an impressive 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high. The exhibition will also show the amazing diversity of modern birds and how they evolved to become one of the most successful groups of animals inhabiting almost every part of the world from the oceans of Antarctica to tropical rainforests. The 292 piece Diplodocus dinosaur skeleton is already very popular, so again, it’s essential to book your tickets in advance.
